The third edition of the Northeast Green Summit is being held from October 23 to October 26, 2018. The Northeast Green Summit was initiated in 2016 to raise awareness and empower people with the knowledge of the rich and diverse natural habitat, bio-diversity and cultural heritage that the North Eastern region of India is bestowed with. Following on two successful Summits in 2016 and 2017, in it’s third year, the Summit is evolving from an awareness campaign to an “impactful on the ground” approach by focusing on inclusive & sustainable development – delivering jobs and growth while protecting & nurturing the natural habitat and heritage. The Government of India has time and again, reiterated it’s commitment to fully realizing the region’s potential as an integral part of India’s intertwined geo-political and economic agenda in Asia-Pacific, the gateway to ASEAN and a powerhouse of untapped renewable resources. The investments from the Union Government along with infrastructural development demonstrate that the ambition is very real. Within this context, the Summit’s envisages to develop an ambitious regional Action plan that fosters regional exchange and collaboration with the Indian and foreign private sector, besides Indian PSUs and international development organisations amongst others.
The 3-day Summit will bring together participants and key stakeholders from state governments, the Indian and foreign private sector and Indian PSUs, besides international development organisations for multiple bespoke sessions focusing on the goals of the Summit. Read MoreExcluding Assam’s Brahmaputra Plains, Northeast India is mainly hilly in character. Urbanization started with the advent of the British. Between 1901 and 2001, urbanization grew from 4.2% to 21.50% in the region. The urban population also increased from 0.50% to in 1911 to 3.88% in 2011. Compared to the national average, the region has remained relatively backward in terms of levels of urbanization. But in recent times, a significant change and development in terms of growth in the urban sector has been observed, putting a tremendous pressure in turn on the environment and posing a challenge in providing sound and sustainable living conditions. Depletion of natural resources, quality water scarcity, increased air pollution and adverse climate change effects are among the main threats that urban administrators will have to cope with as a consequence of this fast urbanization process. to address these issues and foster regional exchange and collaboration, the Third Northeast Green Summit will formulate regional action points guiding towards the sound implementation of Urban and Peri-urban Forestry in the region and providing environmental services for a better living condition.
